One Year Later: What My Hip Surgery Really Gave Me

A year ago, I had my second hip surgery.

At the time, all I could think about was getting through recovery. I wanted to walk without pain, drive again, get back to work, walk the dog, and just feel like myself.

What I didn't realize was how much the year after surgery would change me.

It taught me patience. Something I've never been very good at.

It taught me to accept help. That's not easy for someone who likes to do everything herself.

It reminded me how important it is to slow down every once in a while and appreciate the things we usually rush through.

The funny thing is, a year ago I thought the goal was simply to heal my hip. Instead, I gained a new appreciation for my health, my family, and the ordinary days that make up a really good life.

I'm still a work in progress - aren't we all?! My hip still reminds me every now and then that I've been through a lot. But it also reminds me how far I've come.

One year later, I'm grateful. Not because everything is perfect, but because I can do the things I love with the people I love. And that's something I'll never take for granted.

Thanks to everyone who checked in, cheered me on, or simply asked how I was doing over the last year. It meant more than you know.

See you around town.
